225 Christian Songs to Teach Your Baby

This post is part of a nine part series on introducing your baby to the faith.  Today’s post is about Christian music.

St. Augustine said, “When you sing, you pray twice.”  I have found these words to be so true in my life.  Christian music takes the words that I cannot find, puts them into song form, and allows me to say them even without thinking.  My favorite time to “pray twice” is after communion.  Music is a very important part of my life in general, and I see it as one of my special gifts.  This may be the best way that I can teach our faith to my children because it is how I experience my faith on a daily basis.

Below are 225 ideas for Christian songs to teach your baby and when you might want to use them.  Scroll to the bottom to get a free printable version of all 225 songs.

Hymns as Lullabies

The first way you can introduce your baby to Christian music is through Hymns that teach her about the faith and about God’s love.  Sometimes we can be turned off by traditional hymns because they are slow and a little mournful.  It’s for this very reason, I prefer to use Hymns in place of traditional lullabies.

Another reason we may hesitate to use hymns is the old language: thees, thous, blests.  Some contemporary hymnals have gone out of their way to remove these old sounding words.  However, I prefer to keep them in when I sing hymns to my baby.  First of all, it keeps the integrity of the song.  Second, the old sounding words are an important part of our language history.  Not only do they harken back to the old days, but they are actually theologically important.  The terms thee and thou were the informal version of “you” back in the day.  In other words, we learned to speak to God as an informal person – a friend, a brother, a Father.  Using the original language can help me explain both history and theology to my daughter.  Finally, I like to keep the old words because they are richer.  If we fiddle with the language too much, we may have to muddle up other words in the song to keep the rhymes.  It becomes sloppy and takes away from the original beauty.  If you are afraid of the old sounding language, try the first five hymns on my list with the old language and see if you can come around.

Here are my Top 50 Hymns – not all are soothing enough for a lullaby, but many are:

Baby Bible Songs

As your baby grows and becomes more interactive, you will want to add some Christian children’s songs into her repertoire.  These songs are fun and interactive and teach the faith on a very basic level, such as “Standin’ in the Need of Prayer.”  Other songs are very active and get children to move and exercise.  Think about “This Little Light of Mine” – it involves actions such as waving a pointing finger to represent a candle and pretending to blow the light out.  Songs like “Who Built the Ark” teach Children Bible stories.

Your local library may carry CD’s that contain Bible songs for kids.  Or you can look into Pandora or YouTube stations.

Listening to Christian Music

Modern Christian songs are also great to sing with your child, but I would not recommend using them as lullabies.  Even when I sang them soft and slow, they seemed to engage Bugaboo’s mind too much.  Set your car radio to K-Love or WBGL or another local Christian radio station to hear some of today’s best songs.  If you are lucky enough to have a contemporary service in your area, attend at least once a month to learn some new Christian songs.  You can also find modern Christian songs by looking up artists in Pandora or YouTube.

Once you have a good list of songs to sing, just sing them to your baby any time all day long: while playing, while diapering, while doing chores.  I’ve assembled a list of 50 Contemporary Christian Songs.  Some of these you may not know (mention in the comments, and I’ll link them to YouTube).  Others are fairly old.  The reason I’ve added so many oldies to the list, besides wanting to share some really great Christian songs with the world, is because they are different from what you hear on the radio now.  This list can help you expand your vocabulary of Christian songs.  Although I had to restrain myself a bit for the purposes of this list, pretty much anything by Avalon is worth listening to.

1 Adonai – Avalon 26 Move – Tobymac

Christian Worship Songs as Prayers

Sometimes when I can’t find the words to say in a prayer, the best place to find them is in a worship song.  Different from hymns – these tend to be a little more upbeat and less appropriate for lullabies.  They use modern prose instead of flowr’y poetry.  And they tend to be about 20 years old or less.  As I reviewed my favorite worship songs for this list I started feeling old again.  I don’t even know what “they’re singing” these days because I haven’t attended a modern worship service since college.  I recommend Chris Tomlin, Matt Maher (a Catholic), and Hillsong for worship songs.

1 Revelation Song 26 Indescribable
2 Mighty to Save 27 God of This City
3 Shout to the Lord 28 Everlasting God
4 My Redeemer Lives 29 Made to Worship
5 Awesome God 30 Glory In the Highest
6 Those Who Trust in the Lord 31 Here Is Our King
7 Unchanging 32 Wholly Yours
8 Holy Is the Lord 33 You’re Worthy of My Praise
9 Come, Now Is the Time to Worship 34 Jesus Come Take Me Away
10 Blessed Be Your Name 35 Be Glorified
11 Your Grace Is Enough 36 Come and Meet with Me
12 You Never Let Go 37 The Famous One

Bonus: Christian Christmas Songs

Christmas is a fun time of year, and I love to get into the Christmas spirit.  But if I listen to the radio, I just hear a bunch of repetitions of “Silver Bells” and “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.”  I’m looking forward to singing some of those fun songs with Bugaboo while we make cookies or decorate the tree.  But on those dark winter nights, I love to snuggle in and sing the Christian Christmas songs.

When it comes to Christmas hymns, my rule is to always sing through to the third verse.  It is there we find the theology on the Incarnation and some of the sweetest lyrics.  For instance, the third verse of “What Child Is This?” reads, “So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh.  Come peasant, king to own him.  The king of kings salvation brings let loving hearts enthrone him.”  Deep.

Of course, most of these are hymns, and there are dozens more hymns out there that perhaps we don’t know very well.  Maybe a Christian band will revive one to be our next favorite.  Here are 25 Christian Christmas Songs to sing with your baby.

1 Joy to the World 13 Go Tell It On the Mountain
2 Silent Night 14 O Little Town of Bethlehem
3 What Child Is This? 15 God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
4 We Three Kings 16 Good Christian Men Rejoice
5 O Holy Night 17 It Came Upon a Midnight Clear
6 Away In a Manger 18 O Come All Ye Faithful
7 The First Noel 19 O Come O Come Emmanuel
8 Hark the Herald Angels Sing 20 Angels From the Realms of Glory
9 Angels We Have Heard on High 21 Sing We Now of Christmas
10 I Saw Three Ships 22 I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day
11 Joseph Kind Joseph 23 Do You Hear What I Hear
12 Emmanuel – Michael W. Smith 24 2,000 Decembers Ago – Joy Williams
25 Don’t Save It All for Christmas Day – Avalon

Here is your free printable of 225 Christian Songs you can introduce to your baby.  Remember, if there are any you are curious about, mention it in the comments and I will add a link to a video of the song!
